Marani is the smallest room and the one we would pick for two people who plan to be out all day.
It sits at the quiet end of the house, furthest from the gate. The old green shutters in the wall are original — they used to open onto the neighbour’s side of the building, and rather than board them up we restored them and left them where they were. Two woven pendant lamps give the room a warm, low light at night.
A marani is the cellar where a Georgian family keeps its qvevri buried in the floor and its wine under the house. It is usually the smallest, coolest, most important room in the building, which felt like the right name for this one.
If you want space, take Rtveli. If you want to sleep well, be six minutes from the palace, and spend nothing on square metres you were not going to use, take this one.
