Every picture we have, at the size it deserves. Nothing here was staged for a camera and nothing was borrowed from anywhere else.

The house, in order

  • A green glazed door standing open between the hall and the sitting room, with a yellow armchair to the left and an exposed brick wall hung with two old telephones beyond it
    01 The door the rest of the house is painted after. We matched the green off a piece found behind a cupboard, and then put it on everything, which in hindsight was a decision.
  • A small bedroom with cream walls, a blue-grey bedcover, two woven pendant lamps and original green-painted shutters set into the wall
    02 Marani’s shutters open onto the neighbour’s side of the building, and always did. Rather than board them up we restored them and left them exactly where they were.
  • Looking through a dark green door into a room with pale pine floors, long curtains and a wooden bunk bed with a brass ladder beside the window
    03 Gombori, from the doorway. The bunk has its own nook by the window, so the children get a corner that is theirs and you get to read for a while after they go quiet.
  • A whole imeruli khachapuri, blistered and golden, cut into quarters on a plate, with olives, peaches and oil behind it
    04 Imeruli khachapuri, out of our own oven, cut at the table. If you are up early you will smell it before you are properly awake, which is the intended effect.
  • A large bedroom with original herringbone parquet, an oak bed under a rust-coloured cover, and a terracotta door framed in green
    05 The herringbone came up from under three layers of later, worse flooring. It was lifted and relaid board by board, and it is the floor of Rtveli now.
  • A bedroom with apricot walls and wide pine floorboards, an oak bed with a blue waffle cover, and an open door showing a bright green bathroom
    06 Alazani late in the day. The apricot holds the light long after the sun has come off it, and the green bathroom through that door is the thing guests photograph most.
  • Slices of khachapuri and pickles on a patterned plate at the breakfast table, on a cherry-print cloth
    07 Eight in the morning at the long table: khachapuri cut up, pickles out of the cellar, and a cherry-print cloth that was not chosen with photographs in mind.
