Alazani

  • Bedroom with apricot walls, pine floorboards, an oak bed with a blue waffle throw, and a large olive-green dome lamp
  • The Alazani room from the doorway: apricot walls, a black pendant over an oak double bed under a blue waffle cover, a mustard wardrobe, and the bright green bathroom through the open door

Alazani is the warmest room in the house, and we mean the colour rather than the thermostat — the walls are a soft apricot that holds the evening light long after the sun has gone off them.

The floor is wide pine board. There is an oak bed under a blue waffle throw, a tall old cupboard we kept from the original house, and one large olive-green dome lamp that does most of the work in the evening. Two thin pendants on cords hang either side of the bed.

Through the door is the bathroom, which is tiled to the ceiling in bright green. It was not subtle and we were not sure about it at first. It is now the single most photographed corner of the building, so we have made our peace.

The terrace is private and faces the town. The Alazani, the river the room is named for, starts a few kilometres out and runs the length of Kakheti; nearly every bottle you will drink this week came from somewhere along it.
