Where you sleep

Four rooms, and none of them is room 3

The house has four. They are genuinely different from each other — different size, different floor, different light — so it is worth thirty seconds deciding which one is yours.

The layout

Where the four rooms actually are

Four photographs of four beds will not tell you which room gets the sun, which one is nearest the coffee, or how far you are from the front gate. This will.

A drawing of the house and its courtyard. Shota Rustaveli Avenue runs along the bottom, with the gate and free private parking just inside it. The house stands down one side of the plot, its far end sharing a wall with the neighbour. The four rooms are shown one behind the other along it, drawn in proportion to their real floor areas: Marani, the smallest at 20 square metres, at the far quiet end against the neighbour's wall; then Rtveli at 35; then Alazani at 30; then Gombori at 35, nearest the parking. Rtveli's and Alazani's private terraces are on the outer face, over the rooftops towards the town and the palace, which is where the morning sun comes from. Marani's and Gombori's are on the inner face, onto the courtyard, looking west towards the Gombori range and the evening. The courtyard fills the rest of the plot: the long breakfast table in the middle of it, two trees, and the coffee house in the corner nearest the street. Rtveli and Gombori are on the upper floor. The drawing is not to scale.

  • The private terraces — one per room
  • The wall we share with the neighbour
  • Marani’s original shutters, still in it
  • The gate, off Rustaveli Avenue
This is a diagram, not a survey. What it gets right is which way each room looks: that is taken from the rooms' own descriptions and from where the light is at what time of day, which is also why there is no north arrow on it. The room boxes are in proportion to their real floor areas. Everything else — the shape of the plot, the size of the courtyard, exactly where the gate is — is drawn to be understood rather than measured. Rtveli and Gombori are upstairs; the plan shows all four side by side. Ask us and we will send you a photograph of the actual door.

The four rooms, from the quiet end to the gate

  1. Marani 20 m² · sleeps 2

The quiet end, against the wall we share with the neighbour — the original shutters are set into it and still work. Terrace onto the courtyard, and the furthest room from the gate.

  2. Rtveli 35 m² · sleeps 4

Upstairs, and it runs the width of the old house. The terrace looks over the rooftops towards town and catches the morning sun — breakfast comes up to it if you ask the night before.

  3. Alazani 30 m² · sleeps 3

Terrace on the same side, facing the town. The apricot walls hold the light after the sun has come off them, which is what an east-facing room does.

  4. Gombori 35 m² · sleeps 4

Upstairs, and the window looks west to the Gombori range. The indoor play area, the board games and the enclosed garden are all downstairs from it.
